Anime
The name ‘Anime’ is derived from animation. The first anime film can be traced to the beginning of the 20 th century. The characters are animated and influenced by traditional Japanese art forms. Anime shows are typically created in Japan and watched by viewers around the world. Characters from Disney cartoons had initially inspired this genre of TV shows, as anime characters have features like large eyes and small mouths. Some of the shows that have been extremely popular in the country are Sailor Moon, Fullmetal Alchemist , and Neon Genesis Evangelion. This genre is pretty popular amongst young adults and kids.

Drama
These shows are centered around fictional and theatrical content. The genre has evolved to include sci-fi, comedy, legal, medical, teen, fantasy, and semi-fictional drama as its subtypes over the years. People tend to favor romantic, family, crime, and real-life dramas. Examples of some of the most famous dramas from the TV industry are Game of Thrones and Law & Order. The TV shows and programs under this genre are made for people of all age groups.

Cartoon/Animated shows
Animated TV shows with moving graphics, similar to anime, are called cartoons. Cartoons, as opposed to anime, are universal drawings animated with the help of CGI. Computer-generated shows are considered a part of this genre, and most cartoon characters are inspired by real-life personalities, Disney characters, or fables and storybooks. Some of the most common examples of animated TV series are the Simpsons, Family Guy, and SpongeBob SquarePants. Animated TV shows and programs used to appeal mostly to kids between the age group of 2 to 13 years; however, popular adult cartoons have made the genre extremely popular among people over 18.

Comedy
From sitcoms to stand-up specials, comedy shows continue to be a popular source of entertainment in the country. Who can forget the childlike humor of Mr. Bean that never failed to entertain viewers? Sitcoms like the Big Bang Theory, which began in 2007, and How I Met Your Mother, which first aired in 2005, have been some of the favorite TV shows and programs preferred by viewers of all ages.

Talk shows
Remember the Oprah Winfrey Show? It was one of the most watched and loved daytime talk shows. Talk shows usually have one or more famous persons or celebrities as guests who are interviewed by an equally popular personality. These shows could be split into a variety of segments, and at times, the show consists of a panel discussing a topic with or without a guest. They could be morning, afternoon, evening, or late-night shows. One talk show that the audience might remember is the infamous Jerry Springer Show, where guests would end up fighting amongst themselves or have heated arguments. Sometimes late-night shows have a band performing or other kinds of performances from guests or audience. For example, the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and Ed McMahon would have these kinds of segments. Talk shows are usually targeted at adult audiences.

Documentary
When you think of the first documentaries you enjoyed watching, you may recall the nature documentaries of National Geographic and Animal Planet. However, this genre has grown to cover all kinds of subjects, especially crime stories and dark issues. Here, real-life incidents and events are documented with a voice-over, which could include commentary or interviews with people associated with the event, issue, or subject. You can find all kinds of films and shows like historical, anthropology, botanical, zoological, and real-life crime documentaries. Popular shows include Wild Wild Country and Seaspiracy.

Horror
Demons, witches, vampires, crime, serial killers, extraterrestrial beings, paranormal phenomena, and supernatural forces are popular among viewers. Horror shows are meant to be thrilling and suspenseful, intended to keep viewers on the edge of their seats. This makes for an exciting experience that horror fans would willingly pick over a peaceful, nightmare-free sleep. Haunted and American Horror Story are some of the popular TV shows and programs in this genre. Horror TV programs are mostly aimed at adults, but kids also tend to watch them.

Apart from these seven types of shows, people in the country also watch news, game, and travel TV shows and programs.
